MORE PRESS: Turning the rock genre on its belly, they are the first children of the rock and roll generation to be louder than their kids.Introducing Joy Rose, mother of four, lead singer of Housewives on Prozac, and founder of MAMAPALOOZA, the Mydols; Placenta; Frump; Black Flamingo; CandyBand and more in a cross section of US cities. MOMz captures the 2004 beginning of the continually increasing media attention as these bands first meet each other and converge in NYC for Mamapalooza in May of 2005 through 2007 when they have become a voice of a growing social and political movement. The concept and reality are humorous, fast paced and intense. Each of the bands is a completely different entity, each member with unique passions, duties and agendas and will transform notions of modern motherhood.Being in a band is likened to being in a marriage and these groups of women formed during and after family life. The balancing act only intensifies as tasks increase with both family and blossoming new musical careers. Simple things like getting kids to school, scheduling rehearsals and playing gigs roll into a ball of chaos and land in a lullaby. One thing that the documentary exposes is how hard working and dedicated these women are to playing music embracing motherhood in order to inspire others to express themselves somehow, all the while maintaining enormous daily responsibility. Columbus moms will showcase their artistic talents at Mamapalooza, noon-8 p.m., May 15 at the Global Gallery Coffee Shop in the Columbus neighborhood of Clintonville.
The fourth-annual event celebrates motherhood and provides a forum for women to express themselves through music, dance, poetry or whatever hidden talents they possess. The indoor and outdoor event also includes information booths and arts and crafts activities for children.
“Moms offer so much and have so much to offer,” says Eileen Motok Clary, regional coordinator of Mamapalooza. “Many moms with small children don’t have the time to get out and perform. Mamapalooza gives them a safe and nurturing space to keep up their chops. Moms with older kids are bursting with ideas, songs, businesses and causes.”
Mamapalooza is a national, grass-roots festival founded in 2002 by Joy Rose of New York. Rose, a rock singer and motivational speaker, wanted to create an event that honored moms by highlighting their talents. She used a public platform for them to build their self-esteem. To the mantra of “Moms Rock,” the first event commenced on a single stage in Manhattan and featured female singers, dancers and poets.
That event has since spawned other Mamapaloozas across the country, as well as in Canada, England and Australia.
The Columbus event kicked off in 2006 at the now defunct Little Brother’s in the Short North. In 2007, it moved to a private farm in Delaware. After a break year in 2008, the event resumed in 2009 at the Global Gallery Coffee Shop, 3535 N. High St.
“I think it’s important to empower mothers to follow their dreams, whether they be in the arts or in business,” says Motok, a Columbus mother of four and a regular performer at Mamapalooza. “I believe that happy, self-actualized, and fulfilled women make great mothers and role models.”
The event is free, but a $5 donation is requested to view the performances. The current lineup includes:
12:30 p.m. – Eileen Motok
1:10 p.m. – Randi Mockensturm
2 p.m. – Joanie Calem
2:50 p.m. – Tenara and Candice
3:40 p.m. – 7th House Moon
4:30 p.m. – Majestic Belly Dancing
5:10 p.m. – Vanessa Prentice
5:45 p.m. – Elliot 12 Trees
6:45 p.m. - TBA
Raffles will be held between scheduled performances, and moms may perform impromptu acts if the mood strikes them.

What's A Girl To Do? We Honestly Don't Know?
The reaction to new government guidelines this week that call for fewer breast cancer screenings highlights an already spirited schism on the issue.
On one side are women's health organizations, doctors and breast cancer survivors who stand by the status quo - annual mammograms starting at age 40.
On the other are experts and activists who view mammography the way some experts view the PSA, the prostate cancer screening exam for men: a test ripe with flaws and a source of unnecessary anxiety.

Recently we've started to learn just what, exactly, qualifies as a "pre-existing condition" in the health insurance industry and the facts are startling.
In eight states and Washington, D.C., insurance companies are able to deny coverage to victims of domestic violence, claiming it as a "pre-existing condition." Insurance companies have also denied women coverage due to previous pregnancies and c-sections.

One insurance company is even telling healthy clients that they must be sterilized if they want to receive coverage! (Listen to Peggy tell her nightmare story in the short video.)
