Patrice Moerman - Following A Dream

WHAT'S YOUR LATEST AND GREATEST PROJECT: Probably teaching guitar and piano. It is very gratifying to see the look on people's faces when they play something that sounds good. I have a problem with some traditional music lessons that adhere to strict guidelines and stifle creativity. To help someone find their musical self is what I aspire to-- I wish I'd had some kind of mentor when I was younger.

WHAT MAKES YOU A 'MOM ROCKER':
I have 2 kids, ages almost 20 and 17-- I run errands, clean my house, and think about how I can play that Jimi Hendrix riff better. I think about this music all the time, whether trying to write my own or figuring out how to play famous stuff.

GIVE US A BRIEF HERSTORY OF YOUR CAREER:
It will be the 10 year anniversary of my mid-life crisis this fall. In 1999, when I was 45, I knew something was wrong. Even though I pursued my career as a commercial artist, music was always what I'd wanted to do, but I never worked up the courage and never thought I was good enough. I came of age when girls just didn't do this sort of thing. I played rock songs on guitar and piano surreptitiously all my life, then decided to out myself by writing a song, which I did 10 years ago. Took me 2 weeks to tell my husband, and when I did, I broke down...he couldn't believe I'd written the song, and from that moment on my life changed.
I wrote a song a day for 2 weeks, and 7 years later wrote over 70, recorded a CD with a producer, and went out to play in public. I now teach rock guitar and piano from my home and at the music school Bach2Rock.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE: Most people who live here are very smart and accomplished, but not in the arts, especially rock music. It's nice to do something that isn't expected around here, especially as a woman and a mom!

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION: Electric guitars-surprise surprise. Les Paul: RIP

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST DREAM: To have Joni Mitchell hear one of my original songs and say it sucks...cause that's what she'd say, but at least she heard it-- the way I play guitar and piano was inspired by a lot of her stuff.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE: To think of myself as a "rocker"-- and to be less inhibited. But I kind of like the "Clark Kent" aspect to it-- no one would expect someone like me to play Jimi Hendrix on a Fender (especially men my age).
