WHAT'S YOUR LATEST AND GREATEST PROJECT:
I am working on a project with my husband and daughter. We are in pre-production for a new CD “The Kole’s! The target date is for May 27th to coincide with our concert at the Cultural Arts Center in Simi Valley, CA. It’s a wonderful theater that seats about 220 and is mostly used for live theater production with the occasional music concert thrown in. Artistic Director, David Ralphe is a fan of the Arlene Kole CD and invited us to do a show.
WHAT MAKES YOU A 'MOM ROCKER':
The term suggests something youthful and music keeps you young!Most people assume I am younger than I am (my 50th birthday is days away) and I believe that my connection with music creates that illusion.
GIVE US A BRIEF HERSTORY OF YOUR CAREER:
I have been singing as long as I can remember...singing at talent shows, church and in school. I used to put on the one-woman shows at recess for anyone who would listen. I received my first guitar from my girlfriends for my 16th birthday (I still have the guitar) and I started writing songs immediately. It would be that same year that I would start a family, my daughter Brandy was born. I had all these dreams of singing and I wasn’t going to give up so I found a band that would agree to have a small child on the road and that’s where I met my husband. After a year and a half on the road I left the band and went to study music at a music college in Canada. I sang in weekend bands, had more babies, ran a recording studio where I sang on dozens of albums, commercials and television tracks. I raised my family and waited until they were grown to pursue my dream of being a performing singer/songwriter. That began 3 years ago!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE:
Being that I was born and raised in Canada and now living in California...It’s the weather!!! I realized how much more outside living I do here. I can ride my bike everyday, play at outdoor venues in December, sit on a beach in December. I say December because after living here for 18 years I still can’t believe I am not shoveling snow!
WHAT IS YOUR PASSION:
Music & singing! It is all things to me. It centers me, it teaches me joy, sharing, unselfishness, space and connects me with so many people in my life.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST DREAM:
To share the joy of singing! I believe that shows like “American Idol” have caused great damage with their perspective on singing and who has the ability to sing. It is an instrument like any other instrument. Anyone can learn an instrument if applied and we are all walking instruments. It’s the most accessible one to learn! I would love The Kole’s to be able to go to schools, festivals and put on workshops and teach the freedom of expressing and the joy of singing!
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE: Being a good Mother! There is this punishingly difficult balance required to retain who you are as an individual and giving your energy to being a mother. Which to me, is the most important job there is! Then there is the whole realization of how fast it goes by. I try and tell young parents all the time the value of what they do, to breathe it in because it is such a short time. A child is the ultimate creation and the ultimate manifestation of a parents creativity! I did not realize that when I was raising my children.
