“Our lives can’t be just about doing laundry and wiping small children,” said Host Jacki Kane. So she created TIME OUT: The mother of all comedy shows to give moms a safe, supportive platform to do comedy, sing, read essays, vent or just get a much-needed break. Each show features topics ranging from “Honey, I Shrunk My Libido” to “Pets and the Kids Who Promised to Take Care of Them” and “Dad’s Revenge.” No matter what the topic, the show strives to keep the humor clean.

Since starting the show in January of ‘09, Jacki Kane has empowered moms, grand¬mothers and dads of all ages, orientation, and situations to take the stage and tell their sto¬ries. What started as a fun night out quickly grew, resulting in sell-out crowds and demand to set up venues in other cities.

Jacki Kane is an award-winning marketing copywriter who performed comedy on the East Coast ten years ago. She thought her comedy career was long over, until having small children. After launching a line of funny greeting cards (www.sassmouth.com) that tackle parenting angst, she considered trying mom material for stand-up comedy. But after being introduced at a comedy club as “that middle aged lady,” she knew she had to create a platform where moms would “get” the humor and other moms would feel comfortable to take the stage.

So she set up the show at a family-friendly venue and invited other moms to take the stage. The show made an instant impact. Moms in the audience could relate to the performers while moms who took the stage got the chance to set their creativity loose in a supportive environment. Sass Mouth® Industries was created in 2005 when a line of Sass Mouth Cards were launched to Portland- area stores. A former stand-up comic, Jacki Sturkie took the material from the greeting cards on stage and pitched the idea of a comedy show for moms to the owners of a family café. From there, the TIME OUT show started and quickly
built a following, revealing a huge demand for comedy devoted to moms, dads and families. The demand has extended into “niche” shows for subset audiences like dads, same-sex parents, nannies and teachers; workshops and private performances.
